What is AnythingLLM
AnythingLLM is an open source desktop application that lets you create chat workspaces based on your own documents. You import PDFs, text files, web pages, GitHub repos, then ask questions about them using the LLM of your choice.
Everything runs locally. No document gets sent to the cloud if you use a local model via Ollama. For sensitive documents, it's the ideal setup.
Strengths
Full privacy possible
With Ollama or LM Studio as backend, the entire chain stays local. Your documents, your conversations, your history. Zero cloud data.
Multi-document, multi-workspace
You can create thematic workspaces: one for your technical docs, one for meeting notes, one for your PDF library. Each workspace is isolated.
No technical setup required
The interface is graphical. Import documents via drag-and-drop. Chunking, embedding, indexing: all automatic. No code, no terminal.
Limitations
Local performance limited by your hardware
With a local model on an M1 Mac, responses on large corpora can take 10 to 30 seconds. The experience is less fluid than with a cloud API.
No multi-user collaboration locally
AnythingLLM desktop is single-user. A cloud version (Mintplex Labs) exists for teams, but that falls outside the free tier.
Pricing
- Desktop: free, open source (MIT)
- AnythingLLM Cloud: paid plans for teams, pricing on the site
Alternatives
- Open WebUI for a self-hostable web UI with Ollama
- LM Studio for local models without integrated RAG
- NotebookLM for cloud RAG on your documents, by Google
Verdict
AnythingLLM is the simplest setup for local RAG without compromising on privacy. If you have documents you don't want to send to the cloud but want to query in natural language, this is the first thing to install.
FAQ
Does AnythingLLM support Excel and PowerPoint files?

Can you connect AnythingLLM to a GitHub repo?
Yes. There's a native connector to import content from a public or private GitHub repo into a workspace.
Can AnythingLLM access the internet in real time?
Not by default. It's a RAG tool on static documents. Web agents can be configured, but that's an advanced feature.
What corpus size is supported?
No theoretical limit. In practice, beyond 10,000 pages, indexing performance can slow down if your hardware.
