The essentials

  • Observability platform for ML models and LLM applications in production
  • Arize platform: enterprise custom pricing. Phoenix: free open source
  • Drift detection, performance monitoring, agent tracing and RAG pipelines
  • Targets ML/data teams deploying models and LLMs in production

What is Arize AI?

Arize is an ML observability platform founded in 2020 that expanded its scope to LLMs and GenAI applications. The Arize platform lets you monitor models in production: feature drift detection, performance degradation, prediction and user feedback monitoring. Arize also launched Phoenix, an LLM evaluation and tracing platform that's open source and very popular in the community. Phoenix lets you trace LLM calls, evaluate responses (hallucinations, coherence), and debug RAG pipelines — all self-hosted for free. It's a dual ecosystem: enterprise (paid) and open source (free).

Strengths

Phoenix open source — genuinely useful

Phoenix isn't a stripped-down version to push upgrades. It's a complete tool, actively maintained by the Arize team. For teams starting out with LLM monitoring, Phoenix is the logical entry point.

Very mature classic ML monitoring

Drift detection, performance alerts, and feature distribution visualization are well-polished after 4 years of development. One of the most complete tools for traditional ML monitoring.

Active community and solid documentation

Arize and Phoenix have dense technical documentation and an active Slack community. Less "fumbling in the dark" than other niche solutions.

Limits

Arize platform: non-transparent enterprise pricing

The enterprise version of Arize is custom-priced. To estimate whether it fits your budget, you need to contact the sales team — no public price indicators.

Initial setup requires dev work

Like Galileo, Arize and Phoenix need application code instrumentation to capture traces. Not a no-code tool.

Pricing

Phoenix: open source, free. Arize Platform: enterprise custom pricing. Check arize.com/pricing for details.

Alternatives

Arize = ML+LLM observability. Galileo (rungalileo.io) = LLM evaluation, direct competitor. Langfuse = open source LLM tracing. Weights & Biases = experiment tracking + monitoring.

Verdict

Arize is recommended for teams that want a complete observability solution: start with Phoenix open source for LLMs, then evaluate the enterprise platform as volume and needs grow. The open source to enterprise path is well executed.
