- CategoryProductivity
- RecommendedYes
The essentials

- Starting at $10/month, invite-only access
- Supertagging, supertags, semantic search, AI commands
- Suited to knowledge workers and developers who want a structured second brain
What is Tana?
Tana is a note-taking outliner based on an interconnected node structure. Each element (note, task, person, project) is a node that can be tagged, linked and queried. The "supertag" concept lets you define schemas: any node tagged "Person" will have first name, email, company fields. The built-in AI understands this schema to answer contextualized questions about your base. It's Roam Research with more structure and native AI.
Strengths
Supertags: schema for everything
The supertag feature turns Tana into a structured personal database. Define a "Project" schema once and all your projects automatically inherit the same structure.
AI that understands your structure
Tana's AI isn't a generic chatbot. It reads your node base and responds based on your data. Very useful for finding information in a dense base.
Ultra-fast keyboard outliner
Tana is designed for keyboard power users. Commands are accessible via shortcuts, navigation is fast, the interface is clean.
Limits
Very high learning curve
Tana isn't intuitive. The mental model of nodes and supertags takes several hours to master. Not for users who want to take notes quickly without thinking about schema.
Not yet widely available
Tana was invite-only. Availability may have changed. Check tana.inc.
Price
Starting at $10/month. Check tana.inc for plans and availability.
Alternatives
For more accessible note-taking: Mem. For a knowledge graph: Obsidian (free). For teams: Notion AI.
Verdict
Tana is the best choice for power users building a highly structured personal knowledge management system. Not for the general public. If you love Roam Research and want more power, Tana is made for you.
